Many people fear becoming old. To them it is a life full of creaking bones and doctor visits. I used to be one of those sort of people, but not really any longer. There's a lot to look forward to as we age - when growing older, one can experience love with a spouse maturing even deeper and the joy of spending time with grandchildren, to name just a few. Plus, lots of great discounts :)

Getting older is no excuse to stop having great experiences. Learn a new language, play Sudoku, travel the world! These are all things that can help you stay sharp! Over the past few years, for example, I learned French. Challenging yourself mentally has been shown to keep your brain younger. Audit some classes at the local college or just start up a book club with your friends. Keep your brain active and engaged!

Learning new things is one of the keys to be healthy in your aging process. You are never too old to learn. Say it again with me. You. Are. Never. Too. Old. To. Learn.

A couple more serious things I've learned:

- Depression is a "hidden" risk for developing osteoporosis. Cortisol is a stress-related hormone related to depression that depletes the bones of minerals. Studies have shown that women with depression have lower bone density in their spines and hips. So, if you're feeling down, see your doctor to find out if you have depression.

- You want to remain fit when you get older not only in your body, but also in your mind. One way to do that is to exercise your brain through puzzles and such. These mentally stimulating games will keep your brain focused and active, which could strengthen brain cells and possibly create new ones.

- As you get older, it's more important than ever to surround yourself with people that make you happy, lift you up and do not bring you down. This can be accomplished by having a nice family dinner where everyone is involved or sharing good times and good memories with your favorite people.

- Oral health is essential to a long life. Even if you do not have teeth anymore, it is still important to go and have regular exams at the dentist so he can check your gums. You can still develop gum disease, oral cancer and other things that can lead to other health problems.

Growing older makes lives not distasteful but rather richer, like a finely aged wine. Traveling through life with a beloved partner and interacting with your child's offspring are enjoyable moments that younger generations cannot experience themselves for a time. Remember to count your blessings, for all have something to rejoice in.
